PART I
INTRODUCTION
Liquefaction was widespread in various parts of
Northern Luzon during the recent 16 July 1990 Philippine Earthquake which
registered a magnitude of 7.8 on the Richter scale.
The Philippine government, through the Department
of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Department of Science and
Technology (DOST) is undertaking steps to mitigate the effects of future major
earthquake not only in areas affected by the above mentioned event but also in
other developed and liquefaction prone areas in the country. Part of that effort
is the project study reported herein.
The focus of this study is to collect reliable
geotechnical data on some areas which suffered major liquefaction damage during
the 1990 earthquake and to generate from these a database which can be readily
accessed and processed by a database management system or DBMS to provide
information pertinent to the aforementioned DENR master project.
The present study covered liquefaction-damaged
areas Dagupan City, Pangasinan; Agoo and Aringay in La Union, and the towns of
Gerona and Pura in Tarlac. The widely used method of exploration by borings with
standard penetration testing (SPT) was employed in conjunction with a procedure
that is increasingly being used for liquefaction assessment - the Dutch Cone
Penetration Test (CPT).
